The Mount Olive Baptist Church (MOBC) community is enveloped in a sense of profound loss as we come to terms with the passing of Clifton Eugene “Gene” Williams. He transitioned to his brand-new heavenly home on October 9, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of faith and community service that is nothing short of inspirational.
A Cornerstone of Faith and Leadership
For those who knew Eugene, his commitment to MOBC was unmistakable. As Trustee Board President, he didn’t just hold a title; he was a guiding light, his leadership marked by wisdom and integrity and his heart and laughter his most prominent feature. Gene was a man whose counsel was sought and respected, not just in church matters but in life’s challenges as well.
A Spiritual Anchor in Our Community
Eugene was not just a church member; he was a spiritual anchor in our community. Born 72 years ago, he devoted his life to serving Christ and others. As the Trustee Board President, his leadership was both ethical and thoughtful, guiding the church’s direction with a steady hand and a wise heart.
The Resonance of His Voice
Eugene’s unforgettable, bombastic voice was a staple in the MOBC Mass Choir. It was more than just a voice; it was an instrument of faith. His vocal contributions transcended mere sound, touching our hearts and lifting our spirits.
A Life Beyond the Church Walls
Eugene’s service to MOBC was not confined to Sunday mornings or board meetings. He extended his stewardship to the physical church grounds, taking pride in maintaining a welcoming environment for all. In his professional life, Gene dedicated many years to Freightliner in Gastonia, serving diligently until his retirement. This work ethic was a testament to his character, mirrored in every role he took on.
A Pillar in Family Life
Family was the cornerstone of Eugene’s world. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Ann Williams, and their two wonderful daughters, Dana Ashley Williams and Mellissa Williams Thomas. Beyond that, Eugene was the patriarch of a large extended family, a role he cherished. His values, kindness, and sense of responsibility are alive in his grandchildren, a testament to his impactful presence.
An Extended Sphere of Influence
Outside the sanctuary of MOBC, Gene was an active participant in the Laymen League. This was a man whose faith had both roots and wings, grounding him in his community and elevating those fortunate enough to cross his path.
Honoring an Irreplaceable Soul
To say we will miss Gene is an understatement. He was a man whose life was a sermon, whose actions were a prayer, and whose legacy will forever be etched in the history of MOBC.
Remembering Gene
A funeral service in honor of Gene will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 2 pm at Mount Olive Baptist Church. Friends and family are welcome to gather 30 minutes prior. He will be laid to rest in the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
As we reflect on the remarkable life of Eugene, let’s find solace in the Bible, a source he often turned to:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
– Psalm 34:18
